Aviation giants team up for greener flights

Boeing, Lufthansa, and Rolls-Royce will begin flight tests in Montana later this month to evaluate technologies aimed at reducing fuel consumption and noise in commercial aviation. The collaboration will use a Boeing 787 Dreamliner to test two innovations: a shorter engine inlet with sound-dampening materials, and algorithm-generated flight paths designed to lower noise near airports.

Two technologies, one test plane

The Next Generation Inlet shortens and lightens the engine inlet while keeping acoustic performance intact. It is designed to work with more fuel-efficient engines planned for future aircraft. The other focus, Intelligent Operations, creates optimized departure and arrival routes using real-time data to balance fuel savings against noise reduction.

Testing will continue through mid-August at Boeing’s facility in Glasgow. The 787-9 assigned to the project carries Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines and is scheduled for delivery to Lufthansa afterward. This aircraft is part of Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator Explorer program, which has evaluated over 260 technologies since 2012.

The FAA’s CLEEN program supports the effort. This initiative brings together public and private sectors to reduce energy use, emissions, and noise in aviation. The FAA’s Office of Environment and Energy manages the program, which funds research to speed up adoption of cleaner, quieter aircraft.

“Collaboration between government and industry can move new technologies from the lab to real-world use,” said Julie Marks, the FAA’s executive director of environment and energy. The CLEEN program has already contributed to engines and airframes that burn less fuel and produce less noise than earlier models.

Fuel represents about 20% of airline operating costs, and noise limits near airports can restrict flight schedules. Technologies that address both could help carriers comply with environmental rules while improving financial performance.

Boeing’s chief technology officer, Lane Ballard, described the inlet and flight-path systems as concepts that could increase aircraft value for airlines and suppliers. Lufthansa’s chief technology officer, Grazia Vittadini, stated the partnership seeks to advance aviation by proving new technologies under real conditions. Rolls-Royce, which provided engineering for the inlet tests, called the project the outcome of a decade-long partnership with Boeing.

The ecoDemonstrator program has successfully turned experimental ideas into commercial products. Past tests included wing coatings to reduce drag, sustainable aviation fuels, and software to improve flight efficiency. Some of these technologies are now used in Boeing’s production aircraft.

The 787-9 will eventually enter Lufthansa’s fleet. Until then, it will fly routes designed to measure how the new inlet and flight-path algorithms perform under different conditions. Data from these flights will be shared with the FAA and industry partners to guide future aircraft designs.
