Trump Banned for Money Laundering; WestJet on Strike; FIFA in Crisis

President Donald Trump was advised to halt any new military action against Iran on Monday, according to reports. Multiple Gulf states intervened to urge a diplomatic approach, specifically asking the president to hold off on attacks while mediators work on reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Qatar presented a fresh proposal to Iran regarding new traffic patterns for ships in the waterway, and Iranian diplomats reportedly responded positively to the plan.

The State Department issued a warning for Americans across the Middle East to consider leaving the region or be prepared to depart on short notice due to flight disruptions and security risks. Tensions remain high as the conflict with Iran appears to be escalating.

Saudi Arabia also moved to bolster regional security by proposing an international maritime-defense alliance following attacks on oil tankers in the Red Sea by the Houthi group. The Saudi defense ministry noted that dozens of countries met to discuss the plan on Thursday, with 14 nations, including Egypt and Qatar, expressing support.

FIFA Faces Leadership Crisis

FIFA abandoned its plan to sell shares in the World Cup through FIFA Forward Enterprises late Friday. The governing body said the proposal had become too divisive to proceed. President Gianni Infantino announced the decision, stating that the project had created divisions that were no longer in the interest of the organization’s goals.

The announcement came less than 24 hours after FIFA had doubled down on the plan despite mounting controversy. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) lost confidence in FIFA’s leadership, while CONCACAF claimed the organization had stopped putting football first.

Banking and Labor Disputes

Capital One closed the Trump Organization’s bank accounts in 2021 following an anti-money-laundering review. The bank’s filing argues that the closures were the result of months of analysis by its AML team in accordance with bank policies, countering allegations that the accounts were closed due to political beliefs.

While WestJet deals with labor unrest, Hungary faced a different kind of crisis. The Paksi nuclear power plant was shut down on Sunday due to severe drought conditions causing record-low water levels on the Danube River, which left cooling pumps unable to function. The facility provides approximately 40% of the country’s electrical power.

Europe’s Border and Repair Rules

Spain installed a 500-meter containment barrier along the sea border with Morocco after approximately 60,000 migrants breached the frontier last week. The death toll rose to 67, including migrants who drowned or were killed in a stampede. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez criticized European leaders for responding to the crisis with what he called prejudice and political interest.

Meanwhile, the European Union’s right-to-repair directive came into effect on Friday. The new rules make it easier and less expensive for consumers to repair household appliances, smartphones, and electronics rather than replacing them. Manufacturers are now required to supply spare parts and technical documentation, and they are prohibited from using software to prevent independent repairs.

The right-to-repair legislation appears to be having an immediate effect on the industry. Apple released the MacBook Neo laptop, which features a design that allows for easy repair, lacking the proprietary screws and adhesive used in previous models. This contrasts sharply with the practices of companies like Epson, which is currently facing criminal charges in France for allegedly practicing planned obsolescence by blocking printing until ink cartridges were replaced and shortening the lifespan of ink pads.
